Course Description

Enhance Your English Skills and Work Towards NCEA Level 2 Literacy Credits

This course is designed to help you strengthen your English reading and writing skills while working towards the NCEA Level 2 literacy credits required for entry into tertiary education.

Course Requirements

  • Reading and writing homework is compulsory.
  • All ākonga (learners) must be fluent in English.
  • All ākonga/ learners are required to read 2 novels and watch 2 films before the course start date.
  • Internal assessments will be conducted towards the end of the course.
  • Please note: achievement of NCEA Level 2 is not guaranteed—success depends on each learner’s individual effort and performance.

Eligibility

  • Learners must be 16 years or older to enrol.

Assessment and Standards

Upon successful completion of the course and internal assessments, learners will be awarded the following NZQA Unit Standards:

  • Unit Standard 91101 (Version 2)Produce a selection of crafted and controlled writing (6 credits)
  • Unit Standard 91106 (Version 2)Form developed personal responses to independently read texts, supported by evidence (4 credits)

Please allow 10–15 working days for NZQA to process your results.

Course Materials

Upon your enrolment, you shall receive a list of recommended novels and films, from which you are required to choose 2 novels to read and 2 films to watch before the course begins. 

At all sessions, please bring a pen, paper. Also, please bring a digital device, such as laptop or tablet for your in-class research.

Course Fee Subsidy

This course is subsidised by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) for NZ citizens and permanent migrant adults, their partners on work visas or visitor visas, and refugees. To qualify, registrants should be over the age of 16 years and not currently enrolled in a secondary school. You must provide evidence of NZ citizenship, residency, or refugee status to our staff for sighting purposes.

For Non-Resident students, there will be a surcharge of NZD$20.

Please note: All courses need a minimum number to go ahead. If your course does not have enough enrolments, we regret that we will have to cancel and will let you know either by email or text. Courses are usually cancelled, when necessary, 2-3 working days prior to the scheduled start date.
